Exhibition concept: Slavko Šterk

Exhibition design: Željko Kovačić
Collected together here are the drawn and written graffiti that Slavko Šterk has systematically photographed over the last ten years, from the 9th centenary celebrations of the foundation of the See of Zagreb (now an archdiocese), rendered additionally important by the visit of the head of the Catholic Church Pope John Paul II, right down to the present day, when Croatia has at last become an official candidate for membership in the EU. It was necessary to be a bit of a “deer-hunter”. Graffiti are created fast, vanish still faster. Of the total number of over 4,500 shots, Šterk accessioned 1,650 photos (today they are in the Photographic collection of the Zagreb City Museum, accessible to every well-intentioned visitor). A selection (thanks to the unselfish and generous help of the graffiti artists Slaven “Lunar” Kosanović, Gordan “Gene” Orešić and Željko “Dock” Rus) was made of the most important drawn graffiti, some three hundred of them, which made it onto the short list for the exhibition. The celebrated “writers” also lent Šterk some of the photos of graffiti he was missing from their own “black books”. Lunar collected the C.V. of some of the graffiti merchants. Krešimir “2Fast” Buden and Lunar lent some of the promotional materials, posters and fliers of various graffiti festivals, exhibition posters, sketches and commercials, without which the exhibition would have been incomplete. A joint action of two of the writers, Dock and Lunar, specially put on for the occasion, led to the creation of a large mural in Gračani, which served as a base for the making of the poster and catalogue cover of the exhibition.
