In Zagreb's memory the name Hermann Bollé is connected primarily to the restauration of Zagreb's cathedral as well as a series of other churches and monasteries in Croatia. This is to be regretted because the name of this gifted and highly professional artist deserved a better fate than to become a synonym for the now rejected attitude towards the protection and preservation of historical monuments found in the expression “Boletika”. This typical representative of the time, the time of enlightenment optimism and unclouded faith in progress, was not only a restaurer but primarily an architect, an urbanist, and also the founder of the Art Society and a long-time director of our first Art School and the Museum of Arts and Crafts.
The exhibition displayed Bollé in the full range of his creative possibilities and interests and brought forth a whole series of facts which will help to complete our knowledge of Bollé 's huge opus and to bring about a more accurate evaluation of his role in recent Croatian art.
